Preparation of sterile medical devices is a risky technical process, the objective of which is to guarantee the sterilisation of the material used for the performance of surgical procedures in order to ensure the quality of care and the safety of the patients.

This is carried out in health care institutions, under pharmaceutical responsibility, in central facilities that process large volumes of medical devices and surgical instruments; but it is also carried out in the hospital; It is also used in medical and dental practices where the volumes of medical devices and surgical instruments are smaller.

Whatever the location and the volume of material used, the sterilisation activity requires a perfect control of its organisation (premises, materials, processes) in a logic of quality assurance and prevention of nosocomial infections.

In health care establishments, it is a complex and multidisciplinary process with part of the process starting in the operating theatre involving the Nurse of the Operating Theatre;més dés dés dés (IBODEs) to continue in the stérilisation premises with IBODEs, stérilisation agents, pharmacy préparators, pharmacists.

In medical and dental practices, the number of actors is obviously more limited (doctor-nurse-dentist-dental surgeon-dental assistant).

This high level diploma training aims to enable the participant to know the regulatory aspects of the sterilisation process, to know the risks, to master the principles of its organisation, in order to optimise its management.

It is also with this aim that the training includes a second section devoted to implantable medical devices and surgical instruments.

In addition to the assurance of providing perfectly stable equipment, the completeness of a box and the arrangement of instruments within it are essential factors for the surgical team. Knowledge of the main types of surgical procedures and the equipment used are therefore elements that will help to better understand this problem.

Furthermore, the training of the surgical team is a key factor in the development of the surgical procedure.
